Towing and recovery charge and fees changes

There will be changes in towing and recovery fees and charges which will come into effect from next Saturday.

It was confirmed in November last year by the Commerce Commission that the towing and recovery fees and charges will be reduced to $41.14 for vehicles whose gross weight don’t exceed 3,000kg and that are within the 5km town boundary.

Commerce Commission Chairman Dr Mahendra Reddy said after consultation with the municipal councils, they have sure to increase the charges to $51.14.

Reddy said $10 from this amount will go towards the public councils for their capital developments. The current towing charge is around $80.

  1. Thanks for this informational post! I've never understood the purpose of towing, but last week I was assigned to write a research paper about the cities laws. I was surprised to find out that the city puts a heavy emphasis on towing, because they don't want people to travel from surrounding cities, and take advantage of parking spaces. I also was surprised at how much money you have to pay to get your car back, and how much it increases the longer you wait to get your car. It's a business that the city is making a great prophet on!

  2. I think that it is very important to have a towing company working along side your business if you have employee parking. The reason I believe this is because parking spots need to be regulated to ensure that the employees have a place to park. I know my sister's company has a towing company that they work in conjunction with.

  3. @katysewell12, I couldn't agree more. I live at a large college student housing complex and parking is a nightmare with over 1200 residents. When you add to the mix that these tenants are having guests over and use the parking spaces; we need a towing service here to regulate where and how long a person can park their car. thanks for the inspiring post.

  4. One of the things that helped reduce towing costs for our customers was the impound lot software from http://vts-systems.com

A true life saver for towing organizations. Great blog!

  6. My husband just called and said the car had broken down on his way out of state for work. So naturally, I am happy to hear that the towing charges are going down. It's moments when my car is running smoothly that I shouldn't be taking for granted.

  11. I think that it is pretty sad whenever I watch a car get towed from in front of my work place. It is a decent fine to get it back and I know that I wouldn't want to get stuck with a fee like that. I am very aware of where I park now to make sure that I never have a problem with that.

  12. That's a relief! Ever since my days in college I've been hyper-vigilant about where I park. Glad to know some companies charge reasonable fees.

  14. I remember the first and only time I have ever been towed was when I was a senior in high school. I had just got a new car a drove all my friends out to eat. When we came out my car was gone and I thought for sure it had been stolen. It was a horrible ordeal for me, luckily it hasn't happened again.

  15. I have been wondering what the average fees are for towing. I have an old car in my driveway that won't even start. I want to take it to a junk yard, but don't have the resources to do this myself.

  16. Yay, I love hearing that the towing fees will be going down! That is such great news. It seems like a lot of cars get towed around here and so now it will be less expensive. I do appreciate towing services, it saved my brother in a snow storm last week.

  17. My husband and I broke down in the middle of Nevada, between Wendover and Reno. There are a few small towns out there that we were able to be towed to. I'm just so glad someone was available to help.

  21. I had my heating core blow up on me one day while I was on a road trip. I was about 60 miles from the closest town. Luckily, a sheriff passing by offered to take me into town and make a phone call for a tow truck.

  22. Thanks for breaking down these towing costs for us. I'm curious because my brother just applied for a towing job. I've seen some signs around that have towing charges, but they're kind of uncommon. This is really handy to know so my brother doesn't tow me. 24. When I was in college I got my car towed all the time. I would always come home super late and all the parking would be taken. I would find the nearest spot I could find but it was usually a red curb. I just thought it would be fine thinking they won't tow me, but sure enough I would get towed and have to pay a fee. I am glad that fine was dropped because It was way to much when I got towed.

  25. I've been wondering how much it costs to recover a towed car. This has never happened to me, but I have had friends who have had their cars towed. Does the price depend on where you live?

  29. Here where I live you can hardly park anywhere without being in fear of your car getting towed. I have so many friends who have left their car for 10 minutes parked on the street, and it was getting towed when they came back. I just really wish that they would be a little more lenient on how strict they are about parking laws around here. http://www.cashforcarsandtowing.com/services.html

  30. My friend is a tow truck driver. He has seen a lot of classic cars in his days. He has even made a purchase or two off of some of the cars he has had to tow.

  31. My friend is having the worst luck. Earlier today, he popped a tire. No big deal, he put the spare on, and we were off.
The spare just popped, and we're in the middle of no where. So I'm looking up different towing companies that we might be able to use, depending on his insurance. http://www.allaroundtowingstlouis.com

  33. It seems really important to know what tow companies charge when you need your car towed. I didn't realize that towing fees have been increased. I wonder why if towing charges have increased for the towing companies in the area that I live in.
